Volleyball Battles in Loss to Wheeling

WHEELING, W Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team lost on the road to the Wheeling Cardinals Tuesday evening.

The Bobcats had a tough first set against the MEC North Division-leading Cardinals. FSU started the set off with a kill from MEC offensive player of the week, sophomore Beverly Braun. Frostburg hung with the Cardinals to start the set until two big runs from Wheeling put the set away at 25-9.

The Bobcats came out in the second set determined to play better than the first. FSU was able to tie things up early on a kill from junior Jackie Sterenberg, making the score 6-6. Frostburg then took a lead on a service ace from freshman AJ Thompson. From that point on, the teams exchanged points, as FSU survived set point with a kill from Braun, but WU would come out with a 27-25 set win.

The third set played similar to the second. Frostburg trailed for a good portion until a service ace from sophomore Hayley Delor tied the set at 17-17. The teams then exchanged points until FSU had a three-point run on back-to-back kills from Sterenberg to take a two-point lead. The Cardinals fought off three set points and took the last three points to win the set 27-25.

The Bobcats were led in kills by Thompson with 14. Braun finished with 11 digs, four blocks and nine kills.

With the loss, FSU falls to 8-17 on the year, while Wheeling improves to 21-5. Frostburg returns to action as they host West Liberty Friday, November 5 at 7 PM, where it will be senior day. For more information on Frostburg athletics visit frostburgsports.com.
