INSTITUTE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team lost in the quarterfinals of the MEC playoffs to the number one-seeded Wheeling Cardinals 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-20).
The Bobcats went back-and-forth with the Cardinals in the first set as sophomore Hayley Delor served an ace to put Frostburg up 11-7. Wheeling would fire back with three straight kills and reduce the lead to one. After being tied 14-14, first team All-MEC sophomore Beverly Braun would smash a ball past the WU defense to take the lead. The Cardinals would take control of the set after that, as they would take advantage of several Bobcat errors and win the set 25-22.
The second set would be dominated by Wheeling as they got out to an early lead and never looked back. The Cardinals would pull out nine straight points to extend their lead to 14-3, eventually winning 25-8.
Frostburg would start the third set strongly, as junior Bianca Smalls would serve up an ace. The Bobcats would follow that up with a block from Braun and sophomore McKaily Thomson-Moran, then Braun tacked on a kill to make it a 3-0 game. The rest of the contest went back-and-forth, as there would be 10 different lead changes. Wheeling finished out the set with five straight points with the game tied 20-20 to put away Frostburg and sweep the match.
Braun led the Bobcats with 10 kills and 11 digs, junior Jackie Sterenberg would add nine kills, and sophomore Hayley Delor would dish out 28 assists and record nine digs.
FSU finishes the year with a 9-20 record, with a conference record of 6-10. Wheeling advances to the MEC semifinals to face West Liberty on Friday evening.
