Frostburg, MD- The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team picked up another MEC victory at Bobcat Stadium Saturday night against the Cardinals of Wheeling University, winning 4-0 with two goals per half.
Frostburg opened up the scoring with sophomore Lela Clark cranking a corner into the side netting 15 minutes in. 20 minutes later, sophomore Toni Fiocco-Mizer broke away from the Cardinal defense with an assist by senior Audra Curtin. The Bobcats took advantage of most of the opportunities they had in the first half to go into the break up 2-0.Â
After the break, Fiocco-Mizer struck pay dirt once more with a beautiful pass inside the 18-yard box by freshman Carolyn DeSena, helping the Bobcats go up 3-0 just four minutes into the second half. The chances would not stop after that tally as the Bobcats rung the crossbar on their next 3 shots on goal, creating consistent pressure on the Cardinals defensive third.Â
The Bobcats continued to pour it on as senior Alexis Pate broke away from the Wheeling defenders and rocketed a shot into the right corner with 18 minutes left in the game for the 4-0 lead. The game was all but over until the unthinkable happened, as all the lights in the stadium shut off. The lights were originally scheduled to turn off at 10 pm, as they were promptly turned back on within a short amount of time for the Bobcats and Cardinals to resume play and finish the contest.
Sophomore Ashley Bilger made a couple fine saves in earning her seventh clean sheet of the year, as the final minutes of the game were played by senior Stephanie Vigezzi to preserve the shutout.
With this victory, Frostburg improves to 9-2-1 on the year, while Wheeling falls to 3-8-1. The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, October 20 as they take on West Liberty in West Liberty, WV, kick-off is set for 5 PM. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
