Volleyball Narrowly Defeated in Five Sets

BUCKHANNON, W. Va.- The Frostburg State Volleyball team narrowly fell in a five-set match with West Virginia Wesleyan on the road Thursday evening.

In set one, the game was fairly even until WVWC went on a seven-point run to take a 12-6 lead and eventually lead 16-8. FSU would mount a heavy comeback, eventually scoring five straight points to take a 24-22 lead, but Wesleyan fended off a pair of set points. After a series of trading points, WVWC eventually took the set with a 30-28 score.

Both sides would play out a tight opening to the second set, with Frostburg taking a slight 15-13 lead. FSU took five of the next six points, capped off by an ace from redshirt sophomore Hayley Delor for a 20-14 lead. WVWC would try to get back into the game, scoring the next three points, but Frostburg was able to close out the set off a Wesleyan error to win the set 25-19 and tie the match 1-1.

Frostburg would keep their momentum going into the third set, taking a 7-4 lead highlighted by sophomore Beverly Braun earning back-to-back points on an ace and a kill. The teams would go back-and-forth to get the score to 20-18 in favor of FSU, as they took five of the next seven points, winning the set 25-20 on another Delor ace to go ahead 2-1.

Wesleyan would come out strong in set four, taking a commanding 16-7 lead, eventually pushing it to 21-13. Frostburg would attempt to claw their way back, getting to within three points at 23-20, but two straight WVWC points gave them the set 25-20 and sending the match to a deciding fifth set.

For the second straight set, Wesleyan started quickly, jumping to a 5-1 lead before three errors got FSU back to 5-4. WVWC continued to apply pressure, getting the lead to 9-6 but again Frostburg came back to tie the set at 12-12. Wesleyan then took three of the next four points to take the set 15-13 and complete the match comeback 3-2.

Braun led the team in kills with 20, while Delor had 47 assists, 16 digs, three aces, and a pair of blocks. Junior Jackie Sterenberg got into double-digit kills with 13, while Braun and junior McKenna Houser helped defensively with 12 digs each.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 4-14 on the year, while Wesleyan improves to 3-12. FSU is back in action Saturday, October 16 to face Fairmont State for Homecoming Weekend, with the match set to begin at 12 p.m. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
