FSU Falls In Doubleheader

CARY, N. C. – The Frostburg State baseball team lost both games in the doubleheader at USA Baseball National Training Complex at Thomas Brooks Park Saturday, falling 6-4 to Assumption and 10-6 to Le Moyne.
Game One:

Frostburg fell begin early by a score of 4-0 after the third inning as Assumption piled in four runs off of a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly. FSU got the offense going in the bottom of the fourth inning with senior Mitch Fyffe reaching on an error. Followed by junior Andy Iglesias getting hit by the pitch. After junior Josh Clegg flew out to centerfield, junior Bret Fogle knocked a double into right field driving in two runs. It was Fogle's second double of the ballgame and made the score 4-3 Assumption.

Junior Jared Mouton continued his productive weekend at the plate with a hard hit single to the left fielder driving in Fogle. After the Greyhounds went down in the top half of the fifth inning, FSU tacked another run to tie the game at 4-4 from Fyffe's single scoring first-year AJ Campbell.

Assumption got the best of the Bobcat bullpen scratching across two runs on senior hurler Franco Velasquez making the game 6-4 Greyhounds. FSU went down in order in both the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, failing to grab a hit until the final stanza.

Fogle ended the game going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Fyffe went 1-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI. First-year Ben Vok tossed five innings allowing only five hits and striking out five hitters. Vok didn't allow an earned run in his first collegiate start. Senior Caleb Smith threw three innings in relief, allowing only one hit and striking out two Greyhounds.
 
Game Two:

FSU went back and forth with Le Moyne as both teams were limited to one total run through the first three innings.

Frostburg got a single from sophomore Nick Benitez in the first inning but stranded him at second base. Campbell toed the slab for the Bobcats getting the first three Dolphins out in the first.

The offense came in the bottom of the second when Le Moyne scored a run off of a single to centerfield after a double to lead off the inning. Campbell rallied after surrendering the run by getting two Dolphins to pop out and striking out another.

Frostburg's offense came to life in the top of the fourth inning. Roell led the inning with a hit by pitch, followed by a Jackson single to right field. Campbell drew a walk loading the bases up for junior DJ Coleman. Coleman belted a fly ball to left field scoring Roell from third base and knotting the game up at one apiece. After a Fyffe walk, first-year catcher Hayden McLaughlin singled to left field scoring Jackson to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead in the game.

Behind back-to-back errors, Le Moyne regained the lead making the score 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. FSU went down in order in the top of the sixth inning.

The Dolphin offense sparked for three more runs as they utilized a pass ball and timely hitting to open up a 7-2 lead. FSU responded with a couple of runs of their own. After sophomore Worthy Hollister drew a walk, Benitez singled to left center scoring Hollister. Roell followed up with a double bringing home Benitez making the score 7-4 Le Moyne.

Le Moyne added one more run in the bottom of the seventh, followed by Frostburg scratching across another one after a Hollister single to right field making the score 8-5. The Dolphins scored two more runs to make the difference five runs in the bottom of the eighth. The scoring stopped with FSU tallying another run after Campbell reached on a fielder's choice.

Benitez went 3-for-5 in the game with one RBI and a double. Hollister went 1-for-1 with a walk, one run and an RBI. Roell ended his day 2-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI.
