Frostburg Cruises To Season Opening Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg volleyball team cruised into the 2019 season and NCAA Division II in an impressive way on Friday night as the Bobcats cruised to a 3-0 shutout of Lincoln in front of packed Bobcat Arena.
 
Frostburg opens the season 1-0 after taking the sets 25-16, 25-10, and 25-14. Lincoln, meanwhile, settles at 0-2 this fall.
 
The Bobcats hit .235 with 37 kills in their commanding three set win.
 
Set one was the closest of the night, and the Bobcats had a 7-0 run in the middle of the set for a 16-7 cushion. First-year Edwyna Lainez closed out the first set with a kill off an assist from senior Cori Smothers. In set two, Frostburg used a 7-0 run to close out the set 25-10. In the third game, sophomore Delanie Day finished the third set of the match for the hosts with a service ace to win 25-14.
 
The Bobcats hit .333 with 13 kills in the second set and followed it up with 12 kills and .235 hitting percentage in the third set.
 
First-year Jacqueliine Sterenberg paced the FSU attack with 11 kills. Senior Bailey Godlove finished with 6 kills and sophomore Hailey Altemus contributed five kills and three assisted blocks for the Bobcats.
 
First-year Edwyna Lainez handed out 22 assists and finished with a team-high six serving aces.
 
Smothers led Frostburg in digs with 15, followed by senior Kathryn Lough with 12 digs.
 
Frostburg returns to action on Tuesday at 6:00 pm when it faces Lincoln University for the second half of a home and home.
