FROSTBURG, Md. – On Sunday afternoon the Frostburg State field hockey team hosted Lindenwood for the second matchup of the season. The Bobcats fell to the Lions with a final score of 3-1.
Frostburg's offense was powered by senior Logan Gladden who tallied three shots during the contest and junior Gabby Rachuba who took two. The defense was tested as senior goalkeeper Sierra Smizer faced 17 shots and registered nine saves.
The game started with Frostburg taking the first shot of the game as Rachuba had her shot blocked at 3:39. The Lions responded by getting a penalty corner that resulted in a blocked shot. After a Bobcat foul Lindenwood was awarded a second penalty corner that preceded three shots all of which went wide. Frostburg was able to sneak two more shots in from first-year Morgan Matthews and junior Sam Coffey.
The second quarter opened with back-to-back goals by both teams. Lindenwood started the scoring with a goal at 21:09 by Bridget Hoogendijk assisted by Marnie Reidell. Frostburg immediately responded at 22:41 with an unassisted goal by Gladden making the score even at one. After three shots from the Lions and a penalty corner, Lindenwood found the back of the net at 26:08 for a 2-1 lead.
The third quarter was full of penalty corners as Lindenwood was awarded five while Frostburg was given two. Neither team was able to convert on the penalty corners, but both were able to pull off shots. Lindenwood was once again able to find the cage and convert for a goal at 38:08 giving the Lions the eventual 3-1 win. Smizer made five saves during the quarter after facing seven shots.
The game wrapped up in the fourth quarter with an offensive burst from Frostburg as they tallied three shots and two penalty corners. The Bobcats attempted to convert on their penalty corners at 53:36 and 53:44 but both times shots were blocked by Lindenwood goalkeeper Mackenzie Litterst. Shots for the Bobcats came from Gladden and junior Brooke Lafayette.
Frostburg is back at home on October 8 against Slippery Rock with a 6 pm start time.
