FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg jumped out to a 3-0 cushion and had to hold off a late charge from visiting Davis & Elkins as the Bobcats secured a 3-2 MEC victory over the Senators, Wednesday.
The Bobcats pushed their record to 3-2-1 with their third win in the last four matches. Over the last four games, FSU has scored eight goals, while finding the net three times in wins against West Liberty, Wheeling and D&E.
The loss drops the Senators 2-3-0 overall and 1-3 in the MEC.
FSU first-year Tamino Brown checked into the match at 25:04 and immediately had an impact as he scored the game's first goal in the 32nd minute, his third goal in the last four games.
Junior Derek Staines dropped a pass to Brown who dribbled toward the middle of the field. His shot ricocheted off a defender and into the left side of the net for a 1-0 cushion.
In the second half, Frostburg tacked on a goals in the 54th and 68th minutes . D&E was whistled for a yellow card giving the host Bobcats a free kick just outside the right corner of the 18. The free kick was sent far post to senior Blake Geatz, who headed a pass to a diving first-year Lovet Cheg. Cheg's header found the left side of the goal for a 2-0 advantage.
FSU pushed its lead to 3-0 when first-year Gage Adam found junior Youness Benmouna for what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 67:57.
The Senators collected some late momentum and made things interesting for the hosts. Luca Compagnucci scored the first Davis & Elkins goal at 78:19 that narrowed the gap to 3-1.
Just over 10 minutes later, and with time quickly running out, D&E pulled to within one when Victor Pires connected on a shot off a feed from Daniel Cerezo.
The Frostburg defense didn't allow the Senators to get off another shot as time expired.
Bobcat sophomore keeper Joel Assal needed to make just one save in the win, whil D&E keeper Everton Carvalho notched two saves and allowed all three goals.
Frostburg returns to action at Notre Dame (Ohio) on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
