FROSTBURG, Md. – On Friday night, the Bobcats lost to the Chowan Hawks in a four set match. FSU are now 4-2 overall while CU advance to 2-3.
Frostburg pick up their second loss on the season after being defeated by scores of 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, and 21-25.
FSU hit .138 against Chowan with 46 kills in the match. The Bobcats also collected 11 service aces and 88 digs as a team. First-year Jackie Sterenberg collected 13 kills and one service ace. First-year Edwyna Lainez earned 31 assists and senior Cori Smothers recorded 29 digs.
Kills by sophomore Tyler Lott and senior Bailey Godlove powered the Bobcats to an opening score of 6-2 in the first set. Chowan responded with three kills in a 7-1 run in the middle of the set to tie the game 20-20. Frostburg would battle back with a kill from sophomore Hailey Altemus, a service ace from sophomore Delanie Day, and two errors by the Hawks to take the set.
The Bobcats would start the second set with a service ace from first-year Edwyna Lainez and kill by Altemus to jump on top 3-1. But a 7-0 run by the Hawks put them up 10-6 in the set. Five kills fueled a 10-3 run by Chowan to take the second set.
Two service aces by the Hawks put them out in front 5-0 in the third set. A kill by first-year Raven Pratt and Altemus closed the CU lead 5-3. Four kills by Chowan in the middle of the set put the Hawks up 18-12. Two more kills by CU at the end of the set captured the third set to take a 2-1 set lead.
Two kills and a service ace gave the Hawks the lead in the fourth set 4-0. The Bobcats would battle back with a service ace from Day and kills by Sterenberg and Altemus to take the lead 6-5. An 8-2 and 5-2 run late in the fourth set secured the win for Chowan.
