FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team pushed its record this fall to 4-0 with another shutout Saturday to open the second day of the 2019 FSU Tournament.
The Bobcats defeated the University of the Sciences 3-0, Saturday morning, by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 26-24. The match was the closest of the season for Frostburg and the statistical comparisons prove that.
The Devils (0-5) held a slim edge in the match in kills (34-32), but FSU held a 6-3 advantage in aces, a narrow 8-7 lead in blocks and 56-55 edge in digs.
Neither squad a player with more than 10 kills as first-year Jacqueline Sterenberg led the Bobcats with nine kills. Her classmate Edwyna Lainez handed out 19 assists, while senior Cori Smothers collected 20 digs. Sterenberg added 10 digs of her own.
A 6-1 run in the middle of set one helped carry the Bobcats to the win and sophomore Raven Pratt placed the exclamation point on the opener as she smacked her second kill of the game to seal the 25-18 win.
The hosts jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the second game and a quick 5-1 jolt in the middle of the set landed FSU a 19-15 lead. Lainez gave the Bobcats their 19
th point with a kill and later sophomore Haley Altemus smacked a killed off a pass from Lainez for a 24-21 lead.
The third and final set saw numerous lead changes and USciences posted a 5-0 run in the middle of the set for a 14-11 cushion. The Bobcats answered with a 5-0 run of their own and the set went back and forth after that. Sterenberg hit a kill for a 22-21 lead and Altemus later smacked another kill for a 24-22 edge. A pair of errors on the Devils late in the match sealed the 26-24 victory for Frostburg.
