FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg softball team opened CAC play on Wednesday with a sweep of Southern Virginia at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats dropped the Knights 5-3 in game one and cruised to a 10-4 victory in the second matchup.
Frostburg has now won three-straight games and sits at 13-9 overall with its first sweep in a doubleheader against the same team this season.
Sophomore Aliyah Ramey and first-year Amber Keene combined for nine hits in the pair of wins with six RBI, six runs and 13 total bases.
In the opener, junior Katelyn Mehrling struckout three and allowed just two earned runs in 7.0 innings for her fifth win of the spring. The Knights scored all three runs over the final two innings, but before that, Mehrling limited them to just four hits over the first five innings.
The Bobcats plated solo runs in the first, third and fifth innings before sealing the win with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior Olivia Ford doubled down the left field line to lead off the first and she later scored on a throwing error by the SVU infield. Ramey walked in the third and scored on a single from Mehrling to right field before Keene smacked a solo homer to center field for a 3-0 edge after five innings.
Madison Ridgby tripled home two runs in the top half of the sixth to cut into the deficit before Frostburg added two more in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Kat Treff and Ford scored on back-to-back sacrifice flies to right for a 5-2 advantage.
The Knights plated their final run on an error in the seventh to set the final at 5-3.
Frostburg blew the nightcap open in the first inning with five runs highlighted by a two run single from Keene that scored Ramey and junior Claire Hanlon. Sophomore Taylor McCarty closed the outburst when she scored on a fielding error by the SVU infield.
In the second, McCarty singled home Ramey before Ramey singled home sophomore Sam Carver in the third for a 7-0 advantage.
The Bobcats made it 8-0 when first-year Erica Payne singled to right that scored Keene in the fourth.
Southern Virginia staved off a mercy-rule ending by plating a single from with two outs in the top of the fifth. Matea Manuleleua singled down the left field line that scored Airin Lara to make it 8-1.
The Knights tacked on two runs in the sixth before Hanlon singled up the middle and scored both Ford and Carver for a 10-3 lead. SVU closed the afternoon with a solo run in the seventh.
Sophomore Emily Moll went the distance, tossing all 7.0 innings and striking out three while allowing four earned runs.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday when it visits No. 1 Christopher Newport for a DH at 1:30 pm.
