NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg softball team had its 2019 season come to a close on Sunday on the second day of the CAC Tournament with a 9-1 loss to ninth-ranked Christopher Newport.
Frostburg ends the spring at 17-22 overall with the loss, while the Captains advance to CAC Championship weekend next Saturday.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, CNU jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a lead off home run from Kaitlyn Hasty and a three-run double from Grace Wild.
Bobcat first-year standout Amber Keene put the visitors on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo home run of her own to lead off. She lifted a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for her team leading six bomb of the season.
Newport again smacked a homer in the third inning for a 6-1 cushion and the hosts tacked on their third home run in the fourth for an 8-1 edge. CNU added a run scoring double in the sixth to end the afternoon.
Frostburg registered just three hits in the loss as junior Katelyn Mehrling finished with two hits along with Keene's homer.
Bobcat sophomore Ally Weiman took the loss after throwing 3.0 innings and surrendering eight runs on nine hits.
CNU's opponent and location for the best-of-three championship series will not be determined until Monday, when Mary Washington, York and Southern Virginia return to play in the other opening pod in Fredericksburg.
Each team there is 1-1, and if the top-seeded Eagles of Mary Washington win, they would host the Captains for the title series. If either York (fourth seed) or Southern Virginia (sixth seed) advance, they would travel to second-seeded CNU for the best-of-three series Friday and Saturday.
