Softball Drops Pair On Opening Day

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Frostburg State softball team started its season on Saturday afternoon at the Salem Invitational in North Carolina. The Bobcats played two games, losing to Brandeis, 14-6, and Randolph, 10-4.
 
In the loss to Brandeis, Frostburg jumped out to a 4-3 lead following a two-run HR from junior Katelyn Mehrling in the top of the third inning. First-year Amber Keene and sophomore Ally Wieman plated the first two runs for the Bobcats with run producing doubles in the second and third innings, respectively.

Brandeis scored three in the third for an 8-4 lead, tacked on two in the fourth and four more in the sixth for the win. Frostburg sophomore Aliyah Ramey doubled home senior Olivia Ford and sophomore Sam Carver for FSU's final two runs in the fourth inning.

Mehrling finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs and a HR, while Ramey also drove in two.

Wieman suffered the loss in the circle after allowing seven earned runs in 3.0 innings with one strikeout.

In the loss to Randolph, Frostburg fell behind 4-0 after the first two innings but battled back to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the third. Keene doubled to left center scoring Ford and first-year Emily Christmann and Mehrling smacked her second two-run home run of the day that scored Keene.

The Wildcats answered with a HR in the third, one run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and three more runs in the sixth for the win.

Mehrling and Keene each finished with one hit and two RBI. Mehlring took the loss in the circle after tossing 4.0 innings and allowing seven earned runs.
 
The Bobcats will play another two games tomorrow to finish of the invitational, the first against Shenandoah at 9:00 a.m. and the second against Randolph at 1:00 p.m. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
