Bobcat Women Conclude 2019 Season On Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team wrapped up its 2019 campaign on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Urbana in MEC action.
 
The Bobcats finish the year at 11-17 overall and 3-13 in the MEC, while Urbana will continue its season in the MEC Tournament next week. The Blue Knights are 17-12 overall and 12-4 in the conference.
 
Saturday served as the final volleyball match in the Frostburg careers for seniors Kathryn Lough, Cori Smothers, Biamba Tshitenge and Bailey Godlove.
 
Smothers collected a Frostburg-best 12 digs with an assist on the afternoon. Godlove posted four kills and four digs, Lough contributed four digs and Tshitenge capped the day with four kills and one block.
 
Sophomore Haley Altemus led the Bobcats with nine kills while first-year Jackie Sterenberg earned six kills and five digs. First-year Edwyna Lainez handed out 21 assists with seven digs on the afternoon.  
 
In set one, a 6-0 run handed the visitors a 9-2 lead. A 6-1 Bobcat run off kills from Altemus and Sterenberg cut the score within five points 22-17. Maggie Burns smacked a pair of kills off assists from Anna Davis and a service ace from Jenna Franks helped seal a 25-18 first set win.
 
A seven-point run early in the second set handed the Blue Knights a 8-3 lead. Frostburg cut the score within three points after a 6-2 run powered by an Altmeus kill making the score 13-10. Natalie Perez posted two kills following the run and Lexi Reinert posted back-to-back kills in the middle of the set that helped Urbana to a 25-16 win.
 
Both teams battled back and forth in the beginning of the third set until an 11-1 Blue Knight run gave them the lead 15-4. A kill and service ace from Hannah Delor finished the set and earned the match win for Urbana.
