ERIE, Pa. – On Monday night the Frostburg State field hockey team traveled to Erie, Pa. to take on Mercyhurst and left with a 2-1 victory. The Bobcats move to 2-13 on the season while Mercyhurst sits at 3-13.
The first quarter was even among both teams as they each tallied a goal. Mercyhurst struck first as the ball was struck from the right side of the circle by Clare Ahern at 4:50. The Bobcats found the back of the net right before the end of the quarter at 13:20 as junior Brooke Lafayette would be able to tap the ball in after a scrum in front of the goal making the score even at one, Lafayette was assisted by sophomore Rylee Johnson.
The second quarter was stagnant as the Bobcats recorded one shot and one save. Junior Gabby Rachuba took a shot at 21:14 but was blocked. Senior goalkeeper Sierra Smizer faced three shots and tallied a single save in the 15 minute period. The third quarter was much of the same from the second. Mercyhurst took seven shots compared to Frostburg's one. Smizer made a huge save at 36:40 as she saved a penalty stroke against Clare Ahern.
Frostburg had a huge offensive burst in the fourth quarter as they outshot Mercyhurst 4-1 and had four penalty corners compared to the Lakers zero. The Bobcats sealed the win at 57:39 to avoid overtime when senior Logan Gladden found Gabby Rachuba off a penalty corner for a 2-1 win.
