Bobcats Defeat Wheeling for Third Straight Win

WHEELING, W.Va – The men's soccer team completed the season sweep over Wheeling by taking down the Cardinals by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The win gives Frostburg State their third consecutive victory as they improve to 6-6-1 on the regular season and 5-5-1 in MEC play. Wheeling falls to 2-10 overall and 1-9 in MEC play with the loss.

Frostburg State would put the pressure on early in the match, registering three corner kicks within the first four minutes of action.

The first shot of the match came in the sixth minute, when a strike from junior Randy Putnam was stopped by Wheeling's junior goalkeeper Josh Zimmerman.

First-year Addison Keja had the other strong chance in the first half for the Bobcats. Fellow first-year Louie Kerdock played the ball in on a corner kick, and Keja drove a shot on goal with his right foot. Zimmerman made a diving save to his right to keep the match scoreless.

Senior Blake Geatz would open the scoring in the 63rd minute to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Geatz received a feed from Putnam on the right side of the penalty area and blasted a shot with his right foot past Zimmerman to give the Bobcats the advantage.

The Cardinals' best chance to level the score came in the 86th minute. After forcing a turnover, a scoring chance by Wheeling's Miguel Martin forced sophomore goalkeeper Joel Assal to come off his line to make a sliding save. The ball trickled to the foot of Lucas Fievet, who fired a second shot that was saved by Assal.

Wheeling outshot Frostburg State 11-10 in the match, while both sides registered five shots on goal. The majority of Wheeling's pressure came in the second half, tallying eight shots in the final 45 minutes.

The Bobcats begin a two-match homestand this Wednesday, October 23, when they host West Liberty at 5:00 p.m.
