Men’s Soccer Ties With King’s College After Wild Finish

FROSTBURG, Md. – A handball call against King's College late in the second overtime period after what appeared to be the game-winning goal for the Monarchs benefitted the Frostburg State men's soccer team, as the game finished in a 2-2 draw.

Both teams put up an offensive assault, as King's College booted 20 shots while the Bobcats put up 17 of their own.

The first successful goal of the evening came off the foot of FSU first-year Kaps Kapende, as he took a pass from sophomore Randy Putnam and deposited it into the net in the 10th minute of action. The goal was Kapende's second of the season, with the first coming against PSU-Altoona.

The Monarchs tied the game in the 38th minute, as midfielder Sam Pipicelli scored his team's first goal, off of a corner kick from freshman Quentin Szeker-Cortes, to tie the game, 1-1.

King's College scored the second half's first tally, as senior forward Zach Wolcott beat FSU goalie Joel Assal to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute, with the assist rewarded to Liam McLoughlin.

The Bobcats responded just over eight minutes after, as sophomore forward Mo Odolla took a corner kick pass from defender Blake Geatz and blasted it into the back of the net. The second half ended, deadlocked at 2-2 as the two teams looked ahead to overtime.

The Bobcats threatened early in the extra period, as all four of their shots came within the first six minutes of action, including three shots blocked by Monarch defenders. McLoughlin's shot in the eight minute of play was saved by FSU's Assal and the score remained 2-2 going into the second and final overtime period.

With just over one minute left to play, it appeared as though King's College won the marathon match as the Monarchs' Wolcott deposited a shot into the goal, but their celebration turned out to be premature, as the referee called a handball on the Monarchs, taking the would-be deciding goal away. The game ended in a 2-2 draw and both teams walked away with a tie.

Both teams played aggressively, and it showed on the scorecard, as there were 10 yellow cards handed out by the head referee, five for each team, including one served to each bench. Overall, the Bobcats had 10 fouls and the Monarchs had 11, totaling 21 fouls called in tonight's action.

After the tie, the Bobcats record now stands at 3-5-1 while King's College now sits at 4-3-2.

Frostburg will hit the road as they next take the field on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster.
