LATROBE, Pa. – The Frostburg State volleyball team rolled to a pair of 3-0 shutouts on Saturday on the second day of the Bearcat Challenge at Saint Vincent College.
The Bobcats improved to 2-2 on the season after opening the day with a 3-0 sweep of Alleghany (25-17, 25-17, 26-24) and closing out their weekend with another 3-0 sweep of Waynesburg (25-10, 25-14, 25-12).
The Bobcats cruised to their first win of the season over Allegheny by taking the first two sets 25-17. In the third and decisive game, the Gators (1-2) put up a fight, but Frostburg scored the final three points of the set to take the match. First-year Tyler Lott smacked a kill off a pass from junior Katie Onyundo to knot things at 24-24 in the third game and back-to-back attack errors on Allegheny gave FSU the win.
The Bobcats opened the morning's match against the Gators with an 8-1 run for an early 9-3 lead in set one. A pair of Allegheny errors started the run while two service aces and a kill from first-year Haley Altemus closed the outburst. First-year Alyssa Barkdoll hit two kills in the middle part of the match and she later smacked another to give Frostburg a 23-15 cushion late in the set.
In game two, an early 4-0 run sandwiched around an Allegheny timeout handed the Bobcats a 9-4 cushion. Junior Biamba Tshitenge powered the run with a kill and service ace. Later in the set, another 4-0 spurt handed the Bobcats control. Two kills by Altemus started the run. Kills by Tshintenge and Barkdoll continued the run to put the Bobcats out in front and secure the win.
Game three opened with an early 2-0 lead for the Gators but with a kill by Altemus and two errors from Allegheny the Bobcats were closing in. Tshitenge and Lott each handing out a kill along with three errors from the Gators gave the Bobcats a 12-6 cushion. As the game continued each team was handing out errors and kills to go back and forth with neither team having control. It wasn't until the last three points that the game was decided. A kill from first-year Taylor Lott tied the game 24-24 and then the Gators had two errors that decided the game in favor of the Bobcats.
On the match Altemus and Tshitenge were the team leaders for kills. Altemus had 11 kills and Tshitenge with 7. Onyundo was the leader for digs with 11.
In the second contest of the day, the Bobcats took care of the Yellow Jackets in straight sets 25-10, 25-14 and 25-12. Frostburg hit .329 with 32 kills with 37 digs and four blocks.
Altemus had an impressive match hitting .588 with 11 kills and two service aces. Tshitenge hit .438 with eight kills and three aces. Onyundo, an all-tournament selection, posted 27 assists and junior Cori Smothers paced the Bobcats with 10 digs.
Frostburg opens its home slate on Wednesday when it hosts Penn State Altoona at 7:00 pm.
