FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team split its home opener against York (Pa.) with a 2-1 win in game one and an 8-0 loss in game two, in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader, Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field.
With the split, the Bobcats overall records sits at 13-9 and 2-2 in the CAC, while York is 17-7 overall and 4-2 in the league.
In game one, first-year Taylor McCarty blasted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Frostburg the 2-1 win.
Senior Sam Gatton went 2-for-4 at the plate with two hits, while sophomore Katelyn Mehrling smacked her third home run of the year.
The Bobcats recorded two runs on six hits in 31 at bats with six runners left on base, while York generated one run on eight hits in 35 at-bats with 10 runners left on base.
Senior Allison Short earned her eighth win of the season (8-3), allowing eight hits and one earned run with six strikeouts in 9.0 innings pitched. This marks Short's seventh complete game of the season.
In the bottom of the second inning, sophomore Claire Hanlon hit a shot against the right field wall to record her first triple of the season, but the Bobcats were unable to capitalize on Hanlon's scoring position as the game remained knotted 0-0.
York's Ashley Meekins gave the Spartans a 1-0 advantage in the top of the fifth inning as she hit a solo home run to over the center field wall.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Frostburg answered with its own solo home run, as Mehrling crossed home plate tying the score 1-1.
In game two, Mehrling is credited with the loss (2-3), allowing seven hits and six earned runs with one strike out in 3.2 innings pitched. First-year Ally Wieman came in for relief, allowing one earned run on two hits with two walks in 1.1 innings.
The Bobcats notched seven hits and left five runners on base with 19 at-bats, while the Spartans recorded eight runs on nine hits and left eight runners on base with 22 at-bats.
Junior Olivia Ford and Mehrling both logged two hits, while Gatton and first-year Aliyah Ramey both produced a double each.
In the top of the fourth inning, York scored three runs on three hits as Haley Hirn hit a two-run home run to left center for a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Gatton notched her sixth double of the year, but the Bobcats were unable to produce a run and dropped game two 8-0.
Frostburg is back in action Tuesday as it travels to Hood for a non-conference doubleheader set for 3:00 p.m.
