FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team fell in game one to Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Wesley, 2-1, and picked up the victory in game two of the doubleheader, 8-7, on a sunny Friday afternoon at Bobcat Field.
With the split, the Bobcats stand at 16-10 overall and 3-3 in the league, while Wesley is 11-12-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the CAC.
In game one, senior Allison Short is credited with the loss as her record falls to 8-4. This marks Short's eighth complete game, allowing just two hits on no earned runs while fanning six batters with one walk.
First-year Aliyah Ramey led the Bobcats at the plate with two hits, while senior Sam Gatton notched one hit and one run scored.
Wesley scored first in the top of the first inning, as Dori Loukopoulos popped-up to right field on a sacrifice hit scoring Megan DiRubbio from third base.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Wolverines added their second run with a Brandi Dalious double which scored Loukopulous for a 2-0 lead.
Frostburg scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, as sophomore Katelyn Mehrling hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Gatton home to cut the Wesley lead to 2-1.
The Bobcats generated two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning but were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position, dropping game one.
In game two, senior Brittney Platt blasted a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Frostburg over Wesley, while Gatton was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks.
Mehrling started in the circle for the Bobcats, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing eight hits and no earned runs.
First-year Ally Wieman is credited with the victory, improving her record to 5-3. Wieman pitched 4.0 innings in relief, surrendering four hits and no earned runs with two strikeouts.
The Wolverines again scored first taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off an RBI double from Dalious.
The Bobcats answered in the bottom of the second inning as Gatton hit an RBI single scoring first-year Sam Carver from third base, tying the game at 1-1.
Wesley added three runs in the top of the third inning off a Bobcat error increasing the Wolverine lead to 4-1.
Gatton notched her seventh double of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring junior Oliva Ford from second base. Sophomore Claire Hanlon hit an RBI single in the next at-bat scoring Gatton as Frostburg just trailed 4-3.
Wesley's Dalious hit a double in the top of the sixth inning scoring two to expand the lead to 7-3.
Mehrling hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season in the bottom half of the sixth inning, scoring Hanlon and Gatton to narrow Wesley's advantage to 7-6.
Frostburg is back in action tomorrow as it hosts Salisbury for a doubleheader on Senior Day set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Bobcat Field.
