Long Ball Powers Baseball to 13-2 Victory in Home Opener

The Bobcats returned home in style with a 13-2 thumping of Marymount (Va.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team mashed a pair of home runs and received a stellar pitching performance in a 13-2 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) victory over Marymount (Va.) at a sun-soaked and breezy Bob Wells Field on Thursday afternoon.

Frostburg (16-8, 4-5 CAC) played its first home game of the season and first since May 2, 2017. Marymount (12-15, 4-7 CAC) notched four hits but committed four errors in the team's fifth-straight loss.

It is the first win for Frostburg against Marymount since March 22, 2018. The Saints had won seven of the eight prior meetings against the Bobcats.

The 13 runs mark the sixth time Frostburg has scored 10 or more runs in a game this year.

Senior hurler Greg Schneider (6-1) provided yet another stellar pitching performance for Frostburg. He scattered four hits with 13 punch outs and just two walks in a complete game effort.

It is the fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the year for Schneider and second complete game effort of the spring campaign. He ended the efficient outing by retiring the last 14 Marymount batters, which included six strikeouts.

Senior Patrick Bosley (solo) and junior Nick Fuhrmann (grand slam) each homered for Frostburg, which scored at least one run in the first five innings of the game.

Six different Bobcats had a hit while senior catcher Kyle Burger and first-year outfielder Josh Clegg each walked twice.

Frostburg opened up the scoring in the first with a double from senior infielder Mike Takovich that plated junior Brady Adam for a 1-0 lead. Senior outfielder Matt Bougourd brought home a run with a groundout to second, scoring Takovich for a 2-0 edge.

Bosley used a swirling breeze to lead off the bottom of the second with a solo home run. It was Bosley's second home run of the season and handed him his 24th RBI of the year.

Marymount cut its deficit to 3-1 in the third with a single through the left side from Austin Sizemore.

The Bobcats drew three walks in the bottom of the third inning, leaving the bases loaded for Fuhrmann who hit a towering grand slam to left field to hand FSU a comfortable 7-1 lead. It was Fuhrmann's first home run since February 16 against Penn State Abington.

Senior designated hitter Logan Corrigan laced a double off the center field wall, scoring Adam and Clegg for a 9-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the inning for a commanding 11-1 advantage.

Marymount added its final run of the afternoon in the fifth inning to make the score 11-2. In the bottom of the frame Adam cracked a single through the right side to score sophomore infielder Devin Griffith and Fuhrmann for the 13-2 final score.
