Bobcats Sweep Hood in a Non-Conference Doubleheader

FREDERICK, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team notched a pair of 4-2 wins in a non-conference doubleheader against Hood, Tuesday afternoon.

With the two wins, the Bobcats improve to 15-9 overall and remain 2-2 in conference play, while Hood falls to 10-14 overall.

In the first game, sophomore Katelyn Mehrling led the Bobcats in the circle earning her third win (3-3) and her fourth complete game of the season. Mehrling only allowed two earn runs, gave up six hits and struckout four batters.

Frostburg recorded five hits, three runs batted in, four walks and left seven runners stranded on base, while Hood generated six hits, two runs batted in and left eight runners on base.  

Senior Sam Gatton led the Bobcats at the plate, with two runs scored and two hits in four at-bats, while Mehrling notched one hit with two RBI.

In the top of the first inning, Frostburg scored the game's first run as first-year Taylor McCarty singled into right field and Gatton crossed home plate for a 1-0 lead.

Hood answered in the bottom of the second inning as the bases were loaded and Caitlin Gosline reached first on a fielder's choice scoring Kaitlin Barron knotting the contest at one. With a runner on third, Mehrling srtuckout two-straight batters to end the inning.

Frostburg regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning as first-year Sam Carver added a run off a Blazer error for a 2-1 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Hood tied the contest 2-2, as Kristy Erfurdt scored off a Kayli Paugh RBI.

The Bobcats took control of the game in the top of the seventh inning, as Mehrling hit her team-leading seventh double of the season, scoring Gatton and first-year Shylo Arneson for a 4-2 lead.

In the nightcap, Gatton again led the Bobcats from the plate going 2-for-3 with two home runs and two RBI, while Mehrling added one home run and one RBI.

First-year Ally Wieman collected her fourth win (4-3) and fourth complete game of the year from the mound, allowing zero earned runs and three hits in 7.0 innings pitched.

The Bobcats opened the score in the top of the fourth inning, as Gatton and Mehrling recorded back-to-back solo home runs for a 2-0 lead.  This marks Mehrling's team-best fourth home run of the season.

In the top of the sixth inning, Gatton hit her second home run of the game and season over the right-field wall to give the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage.

Hood added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off an error by Frostburg and an RBI single from Paugh cut the lead to 3-2.

The final run of the day came from first-year Kat Treff off sophomore Claire Hanlon's single to right field giving the Bobcats a 4-2 lead and win.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, as they host Wesley for a Capital Athletic Conference matchup with the first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
