Softball Collects Two Wins in Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team opened its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach and the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a commanding 7-1 win over Rutgers-Camden, Friday. In the second game of the day, the Bobcats shutout Lycoming 3-0.

With two wins today, the Bobcats improve to 8-4 overall and have won six-straight games.

In game one, Frostburg's senior pitcher Allison Short tossed a complete game allowing three hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. Short had a stretch in the contest from the second inning to the seventh inning, where she sat down 15-straight Rutgers-Camden batters.  

The Bobcats totaled seven hits, six runs batted in, on 29 at-bats leaving five runners on base, while Rutgers-Camden only tallied three hits with one run batted in, with 24 at-bats.

Senior Sam Gatton led the Bobcats at the plate with one hits, two runs batted in, and two runs scored, while first-year Aliyah Ramey tallied two hits, one run batted in and scored one run.

Frostburg opened the contest with two runs off sophomore Katelyn Mehrling's double that scored Ramey and junior Olivia Ford.

In the bottom of the second, Rutgers-Camden notched run off a Mason single that scored Hans to cut the Bobcat lead to 2-1.

Facing two outs in the top-half of the sixth inning, Frostburg scored four runs and tallied three hits to expand its lead to 7-1.

In the second game, Mehrling earned a complete game shutout victory improving her record on the season to 2-0. Mehrling only allowed three hits and tallied five strikeouts with 25 batters faced.

Frostburg generated six hits, three runs batted in and left six runners on base on 28 at-bats, while first-year Taylor McCarty went 2-for-2 at the plate with two hits and one run scored.

Through the fifth inning, the game remained scoreless until the Bobcats first-year Kat Treff batted in McCarty to put Frostburg up 1-0.  The next at-bat, Gatton reached first on an error, but knocked home sophomore Claire Hanlon to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats final run came from a Ford bunt, as Treff crossed the plate to take a 3-0 lead and victory.

Frostburg returns to action in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. for a doubleheader versus Brooklyn.
