Women’s Lacrosse Collects Road Win at Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. – First-year Jara Matlick and junior Morgan Cavey combined for 12 goals and five assists to lead the Frostburg State women's lacrosse team to a 20-10 victory over Washington and Jefferson, Thursday night.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 1-1-1 overall while Washington and Jefferson moves to 0-1.

Frostburg outshot the Presidents 42-19, outshooting them 25-8 in the first half action. 35 of the Bobcats 42 shots were on goal, while W&J only collected 15 shots on goal.

FSU forced Washington and Jefferson to 34 turnovers, meanwhile, the Presidents only forced the Bobcats to 23.

The Bobcats led Washington and Jefferson in clears (13-14 to 11-30), ground balls (26-20), draw controls (17-14) and free-position shots (7-2).

Matlick led Frostburg with six goals and four assists while Morgan Cavey added six goals and one assist. First-year Summer Cavey collected four points with two goals and two assists, whereas sophomore Molly Biggers generated two goals with one assist.  

Junior goalie Abigail McClure registered 60 minutes between the pipes and totaled five saves to collect her first win of the season.

Morgan Cavey started the night off for Frostburg, as she scored the game's first goal at 28:43, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.

Back-to-back unassisted goals from Summer Cavey at 23:03 and 20:28 pushed Frostburg to an early 3-1 advantage.

The Bobcats opened their largest lead of the first-half at 8-3 as Morgan Cavey found the back of the net on a free position shot. Frostburg maintained a 10-5 advantage heading into intermission and did not look back.

Frostburg opened its largest lead of the game at 18-8 with 13:38 remaining in the contest, as sophomore Mackenzey Adams scored on an assist from Matlick.

Matlick scored the contest's final goal with 23 seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a 10-point victory.

Frostburg is back in action Saturday for its home opener against Susquehanna at Bobcat Stadium set for 1:00 p.m.
