Men’s Basketball Falls Short Against Mary Washington

The Bobcats had four players in double figures in the 81-70 defeat

FROSTBURG, Md. -  Junior forward Edwin Cole compiled his sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds but the Frostburg State men's basketball team was handed an 81-70 defeat by Mary Washington on Thursday at Bobcat Arena.

The duo of Johnny Cronin and Mark Madison proved to be too much for Frostburg (10-12, 8-7 CAC), who remain fifth in the league standings following the defeat. Mary Washington (17-5, 11-4 CAC) jumped to third in the league standings following the conference win and plays two of its final three games at home.

Cronin and Madison powered the Eagles offensive attack with 23 and 22 points, respectively, while Eric Shaw and Jacob Williams added 10 points each.

Cole, who went 7-of-13 from the floor, was one of four Bobcats to finish the night in double figures. The Beltsville, Md. native has scored in double figures in seven-straight games while recording his first double-double since January 20 against Christopher Newport.

Senior guard Tyler Michael poured in a team-high 21 points with two rebounds, three assists and one block in 38 minutes of action. Sophomores Lawrence Pettis, Jr. and Daniel Alexander chipped in 12 points each and Pettis posted a game-high seven assists.

As a team, Frostburg went 30-of-31 (42.3%) from the floor but was limited to just 4-of-21 (19%) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Mary Washington shot 30-of-58 (51.7%) from the floor and 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the foul line.

Frostburg trailed by just two, 35-33, at the half before Mary Washington opened up double digit lead in the second half.

The Bobcats opened the contest with a 6-2 scoring spurt with a pair of layups coming from Michael at 18:18 and 16:20. Alexander converted a layup at 10:42 to hand the Bobcats a 20-14 lead.

Michael put Frostburg up seven (22-15) with a bucket at 9:32 before the visitors took a 25-24 lead with 4:39 left in the opening frame.

The first 10 minutes of the second half were back-and-forth with neither team able to mount more than a three-point lead. UMW compiled a 7-2 scoring run in the second half to take an eight point lead, 65-57, with 6:01 remaining.

The Bobcats went cold from the floor in the waning moments of the second half while Mary Washington expanded its lead to as many as 13.

Frostburg returns to action on Saturday, February 10 for a conference road matchup with Marymount (Va.) at 3:00 p.m.
