ASHLAND, Va. – Frostburg endured a pair of scoring runs from Randolph-Macon in the second half in a 21-14 loss in the season opener for both schools, Saturday.
Frostburg (0-1) held four leads in the opening half following a four-goal effort from junior Morgan Cavey over the first 30 minutes.
Cavey scored Frostburg's first goal at 25:23 and first-year Jara Matlick handed the Bobcats a 3-2 edge at 22:24 off an assist from first-year Stephanie King.
Frostburg assumed a 5-4 lead 1:21 later when Cavey scored an unassisted tally for a 4-3 lead.
Back-to-back goals from Frostburg at 16:24 and 12:36 propelled FSU to a 6-4 advantage. Sophomore Molly Biggers scored the first goal and she found Cavey for the second tally.
At 8:34, senior Courtney Ridenour scored an unassisted goal as Frostburg led 7-6. Less than 30 seconds later, Cavey scored her fourth of the opening half for an 8-6 cushion. King handed out her second assist of the frame on Cavey's goal.
The hosts rallied with the final five goals of first half over the final 6:31 for an 11-8 lead at the break.
Frostburg narrowed its deficit to one goal twice in the early moments of the second after scoring three of the half's first four goals. King scored her first of the game at 15:59 as FSU trailed 12-11.
However, the Yellow Jackets rebounded with four-straight goals for a 16-11 advantage. The hosts later sealed the win with another four-goal run for an eight-goal lead with 3:18 to play.
First-year Summer Cavey connected with first-year Wynnanne Walters for the game's final goal that pulled Frostburg to within 21-14 at the final horn.
Cavey finished the afternoon with six goals on 13 shots to go along with three ground balls and one caused turnover. It's her first six-goal game of her career after posting five goals in two games a year ago. Biggers finished with two goals and one assist, while King scored once and handed out two assists.
Junior Abigail McClure and sophomore Emalie Mayo combined to stop 13 shots and senior Lachelle Coates scopped up four graound balls and caused one turnover. Junior Jessica Hartley won nine draw controls.
Randolph-Macon posted 22 draw controls on the afternoon, 11 in each half and scored on 6-of-12 free position attempts. Alicia Hsieh led the hosts with five goals.
Frostburg returns to the field on Tuesday when it travels to W.Va. Wesleyan at 5:00 pm.
