Football Rallies Past Montclair

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The fourth-ranked Frostburg football team used a 71-yard touchdown pass from senior Connor Cox to junior Malik Morris to complete its comeback for a 24-17 win at Montclair, Saturday.

While the offense scored the game-deciding touchdown, the Bobcat defense did its part when junior Wayne Palmer intercepted a pass deep in Montclair territory late and the Bobcats forced the hosts to turn the ball over on downs with 1:32 to play.

The win keeps Frostburg undefeated at 6-0 and 5-0 in the NJAC, while the Red Hawks settle at 5-2 overall and 4-2 in league play.

The 6-0 start for the Bobcats is the first since 1999 and pushed the team's regular-season winning streak to 11. FSU trailed twice in the ballgame and the score was tied at 17 all after Ja'Quiall Burch tossed a four-yard scoring pass to Brain Kowalczyk with 6:21 to play in the fourth.

Frostburg finished with 351 yards in offense and limited the Red Hawks to just 274. Aside from it's 80-yard scoring drive in the fourth, the second half saw Montclair punt three times, throw an interception to Palmer and turn the ball over on downs on its final possession.

The Red Hawks opened the afternoon with a 21-yard field goal from Hunter Daly for a 3-0 cushion early in the first quarter. Bobcat sophomore kicker Jeremy Harrison evened the score at 3-3 when he connected on a 39-yard FG early in the second.

Burch tossed his first of two touchdowns on the afternoon with 48 seconds showing until halftime. He found Craig Merkle for a two-yard TD that gave Montclair a 10-3 edge at intermission.

Senior tailback Jamaal Morant capped a pair of 80-yard drives for Frostburg, one each in the third and fourth quarter. In the third, he found the endzone from 10 yards out that tied the game at 10, and in the fourth, he scored on a one-yard run for a 17-10 lead.

Cox finished with 298 yards through the air on 16-of-28 completions, while Morant ran for 47 yards on 19 carries and two scores. Morris and sophomore Lincoln Ikwubuo each hauled in seven passes. Morris finished with 180 yards and a touchdown, while Ikwubuo registered 110 yards.

Senior linebacker Dre'Quan Reed posted a team-best 13 tackles with two coming behind the line. Palmer added four tackles, 0.5 TFLs and one interception.

The Bobcats return to action next Saturday when they host Southern Virginia for Homecoming at 1:00 pm.
