FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team claimed their first victory of the 2017 season, edging Washington & Jefferson 1-0 in the home opener Wednesday.
Senior Melanie Bell found an opening and hit the back of the net in the 58
th minute for the game's only goal. Junior Danielle Ferris and senior Lia Kelly were credited with assists on the goal.
Frostburg notched 15 shots compared to the Presidents' nine. Sophomore Gwen Schemm paced the Bobcats with six shots, while Ferris tallied four.
Bell also had an opportunity in the seventh minute that bounced off W&J keeper Allison Rinehimer that she eventually corralled.
In the 40
th minute, freshman goalkeeper Jenny Bullers made a diving save to keep the game scoreless heading into the half.
The Bobcats had an opportunity to get on the board early in the second half when sophomore Brooke Shehade's shot went slightly wide right of the post.
Two minutes later, in the 49
th minute, a corner kick from Schemm found Ferris for a header that was kicked away at the line by a Presidents' defender. Schemm's ensuing rebound attempt was deflected and saved by the keeper.
After Bell's tally, Schemm hit a laser from 25 yards out in the 65
th minute that took a jumping save by Rinehimer.
The last scoring chance came from Ferris, who had a one-on-one with the keeper, but was stopped on an aggressive save.
The Bobcats are in action Saturday when they travel to play Bridgewater at 2:00 p.m.
