ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown scored a goal in each half and defeated the Frostburg field hockey team 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Nicole Leighty led both starting keepers with 10 saves.
Two of the Bobcats' three first-half shots needed saved. Freshman Gabby Rachuba had a shot denied at 7:24 and junior Holly Van Wie had an attempt booted away moments later at 11:22.
Leighty made seven first-half saves and was helped out in 26
th minute when junior Cara Morrell cleared a shot off the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
Emma Christman put the hosts on the scoreboard at 26:56 with her second goal of the season to make it 1-0.
The Blue Jays opened the second half with their second goal of the contest for a 2-0 edge. Christman buried a shot in the 42
nd minute off a pass from Madison Kubik.
Frostburg's best scoring opportunity came at 55:08 in the second half when Etown was whistled for a foul. The Bobcats received a penalty stroke, but Rachuba's attempt was saved by keeper Margo Donlin.
In the closing minutes of the contest, Van Wie and Rachuba each had a shot sail wide right as the final horn sounded.
Elizabethtown finished with 18 shots to Frostburg's seven.
Aside from Leighty's second double-digit save effort of the young season, Rachuba led the club with five shots. Rachuba also led the way offensively in the Bobcats' season-opener with three shots.
Frostburg returns to action this Friday, September 8 against Randolph-Macon at 7:00 p.m. The FSU Tournament contest will serve as the Bobcats' home-opener, and the game will be streamed live on the Bobcat Sports Network.
