Bobcat Men Fall In ’17 Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg men's soccer team opened its 2017 campaign on Friday night with a slim 1-0 defeat at the hands of TCNJ in the FSU Tournament.

The contest served as the season opener for both teams and the lone goal came in the 61st minute when Michael Kassak scored for the Lions.

Frostburg had a scoring chance just seconds prior to TCNJ's goal, but a centering pass from the Bobcats sailed through the 18 untouched. The Lions gained possession and raced to the other end before Peter Dresch found Kassak for a goal from the left side of the 18.

The Bobcats had several chances to take the early lead and a couple more opportunities to even the contest following the only goal.

Sophomore K.J. Davis had a pair of chances in the first half. His first attempt at 16:18 from the left side was saved by Michael Kale and his second effort at 19:47 sailed just left of the goal.

Freshman JoJo Cann almost capped the first half with a goal with just under four minutes to go. However, his left-footed attempt rolled through the seven-yard box and just missed the far post.

Prior to TCNJ's goal in the second half, junior Brett Basham sent a shot wide of the net following a corner kick from sophomore Matt Morris.

In the 77th, Davis took a free kick from a yard outside the 18 and sent a ball towards the far post. Basham ran onto the ball but his shot hit the outside of the net as the score remained 1-0.

Senior Jackson Bicknell finished with five saves for the Bobcats, including three in the second half, while classmate Rodrigo Valenzuela led the hosts with three shots.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow for the second day of the FSU Tournament at 3:30 pm with Mount St. Joseph.

Game 1
Mount St. Joseph's Seth Freppon scored in the 31st minute to carry the Lions to a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater in the first game of the FSU Tournament. Conner Spivey notched six saves for MSJC.

Bridgewater held a 16-8 edge in shots and an 11-1 lead in corner kicks, but couldn't find the net. The Eagles will face TCNJ in the first game tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
