Softball Rolls Past Hood for Another Sweep

Frostburg wraps up a 4-0 weekend with sweep over Hood Sunday

FREDERICK, Md. – The Frostburg softball team picked up its seventh series sweep of the spring campaign on Sunday afternoon after downing Hood twice. The Bobcats earned a 7-2 win in game one and posted a 3-1 victory in the second contest.

Frostburg improves to 20-10 overall on the season, while Hood settles at 13-12. The two wins are part of a six-game winning streak for the Bobcats.

Game One
Frostburg wasted little time in setting the tone early in game one by scoring four runs over the first two innings. Senior Sam Gatton also helped the cause with two three-run home runs.

Senior Emily Harvey doubled home classmate Jessica Dubbs for the first run in the top of the first. In the second, Gatton homered for the second day in a row when she belted a pitch over the fence in left center that scored seniors Megan Tracey and Emily Zengel.

The Bobcats tacked on three more runs in the sixth for a 7-0 cushion thanks to another three-run bomb from Gatton that scored Tracey and junior Allison Short.

The Blazers got on the board and narrowed their deficit with two runs in the sixth when Kayli Paugh singled home two.

Short picked up her 11th victory of the season as she tossed 6.0 innings and tied a season-best with eight strikeouts. She fanned two batters in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Sophomore Ali Caulkins tossed the seventh frame and allowed just two hits.

Game Two
Frostburg completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory in game two. The Bobcats scored their three runs on eight hits and notched two runs in the first inning.

In the first, Gatton reached with a leadoff single. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dubbs and scored on a single by senior Hannah Tavik for the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, junior Brittney Platt grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Tavik for a 2-0 advantage.

Frostburg tacked on its final run of the game in the third inning when junior Kristen Catlin smacked an RBI-single to right that scored Tavik.

The Blazers tallied their lone run of game two in the fourth inning, cutting the Bobcat lead to 3-1.

In the circle, Tavik threw a complete game allowing just four hits and one earned run with six strikeouts.
