Frostburg Loses To CNU; Will Play Again at 3:00 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Frostburg suffered a heart-breaking loss to Christopher Newport in the first game of the second day of the 2017 CAC Tournament, Friday morning. The Bobcats (24-14) tied the game at two in the top of the seventh before CNU's Leah Andrews knocked the first pitch in the home half of the inning over center field fence for the 3-2 win.

The loss is the first for Frostburg in the tournament and it will return to action in an elimination game later this afternoon at 3:00 pm. The second seed Bobcats will square off against the winner of fourth seed York (Pa.) and fifth seed Mary Washington, who are playing at noon.

UMW defeated YCP yesterday morning in the first game of the tournament, 4-0, before Mary Washington endured a 9-0 (6 inn.) shutout to CNU later on in the day.

All three teams, Frostburg, York and Mary Washington, now have one loss and will be eliminated from the tournament with their second defeat.

With the Bobcats trailing 1-0, senior Hannah Tavik singled to lead off the top of the fourth and eventually scored on a single from junior Brittney Platt.

Christopher Newport (30-8) surged ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Calah Savage smacked a solo home run to left field.

The Bobcats answered again but had to wait until the top of the seventh to knot things at 2-2.

Platt doubled to left center to lead off the frame before sophomore Olivia Ford came in to pinch run. Junior Allison Short posted a bunt single that dropped in front of the CNU catcher, allowing Ford to advance to third.

Senior Emily Zengel plated Ford with a run-producing ground out with two outs that tied the game.

CNU grabbed the win in the bottom of the seventh on Andrews' homer.
