Frostburg Clips Sea Gulls On CAC Day One

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team posted an 8-3 win over in-state rival Salisbury on the first day of the 2017 CAC Tournament at Christopher Newport, Thursday afternoon.

The Bobcats (24-13) broke open the contest with a four-run third inning that handed them a 5-1 lead. Frostburg tacked on two more runs in the fifth and the damage could've been worse as it stranded a total of six base runners.

The Gulls (21-16) tied the game at one following the top of the second and later closed their deficit to 7-3 with a pair of solo home runs in the sixth.

Frostburg, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will now face the winner of host and top seed Christopher Newport and No. 5 seed Mary Washington tomorrow morning at 10:00 am.

Junior starter Allison Short earned her 14th victory of the spring campaign after tossing 6.0 innings with three earned runs on nine hits.

Junior Brittney Platt led Frostburg with two RBI in the four-run third. Senior Hannah Tavik plated senior Megan Tracey on a fielder's choice before Platt singled through the right side allowing Tavik and senior Sam Gatton to score.

Senior Emily Harvey, who singled to the pitcher earlier in the inning, scored the fourth and final run on a wild pitch.

Harvey was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon with two runs and an RBI. She singled home the game's first run in the bottom of the first that scored senior Jessica Dubbs.

In the fifth, Harvey scored again on a wild pitch before sophomore Ali Caulkins singled home Platt for a 7-1 advantage.

Gatton scored on an error in the sixth for the final run and 8-3 final.
