DOVER, Del. - The Frostburg State baseball team won the second game of its Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Wesley in dramatic fashion at Bob Reed Field.
Game One
Frostburg surrendered five first inning runs and could not rally in an 11-7 loss to the Wolverines. The Bobcats scored seven runs on 14 hits with one error, while Wesley finished game one with 11 runs on 11 hits with three errors.
The Bobcats clawed back from the early deficit, cutting the Wesley lead to two (5-3), with a run in the third inning and two in the fourth. Junior Kyle Burger plated freshman Brady Ward on a groundout in the third inning for the Bobcats first run. In the fourth, Ward singled down the left field line to score junior Logan Corrigan.
Two batters later, senior JT Tipton brought home junior Colton Sivic with a single to right, making the score 5-3 Wesley. The Wolverines notched three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead.
The Bobcats responded in the top of the fifth inning with their final four runs of the afternoon. Corrigan brought home senior Brad Garrant after grounding to first. Sivic plated junior Matt Bougourd on a sacrifice fly to right field and Tipton brought home the final two runs with a two-RBI double down the right field line.
Tipton finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and a walk. Burger, Corrigan, Sivic and Ward each finished with one RBI.
Frostburg was held scoreless for the final four innings of the game, while Wesley added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Junior Daniel Richardson (1-1) pitched 3.1 innings and was tagged with the loss.
Game Two
Junior Greg Schneider tossed an eight inning gem, allowing just three earned runs with 12 strikeouts and Tipton broke a 4-4 tie in the 13th inning with a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Bobcats a 5-4 victory.
Frostburg (8-5, 1-1) had 15 hits in game two, while Wesley (9-3, 2-1) had 10 hits.
Corrigan smacked a two-run homer to right center field to put the Bobcats up 2-0 in the second inning. Corrigan finished game two 2-of-5 at the plate with three RBI.
Wesley responded with three runs, taking a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning.
The Bobcats tied the game up in the seventh. Junior Matt Jeffery walked with the bases loaded to score junior Jesse Lee and tie the game at three.
Corrigan drove home the go-ahead in the top of the tenth to put the Bobcats up 4-3. Wesley extended the game in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run to left, tying the game at four.
Tipton stepped to the plate and delivered the game-winning RBI in the thirteenth inning.
In addition to Schneider's effort on the mound, junior Tyler Hoffman pitched two innings of relief. Senior Cody Harman (1-0) earned the win after allowing just one hit in three innings pitched.
