WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Frostburg State softball team kicked off its 2017 spring campaign with a 3-1 win over Salem and a 6-1 loss to Randolph, Saturday, at the Salem Invitational.
In the opener, junior starting pitcher Allison Short tossed a complete game and struckout two for the win. She scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run.
At the plate, senior Hannah Tavik was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Her first hit of the afternoon came in the first inning and scored junior Sam Gatton for a quick 1-0 lead.
Four batters later, junior Rae Harrison reached on an error by the Salem infield that plated Tavik for a 2-0 score.
The Spirits plated their only run on a Brianna Morris run producing single in the third.
Tavik scored for the second time in the ballgame on another Salem error this time in the fifth inning that set the final at 3-1.
In the nightcap, the Bobcats endured a 6-1 defeat to Randolph.
Dubbs singled home freshman Kaitlyn Griffin for FSU's only run in the fourth inning. The run narrowed Frostburg's deficit to 2-1.
However, the Wildcats scored one run in the fifth and three in the seventh to push the score to 6-1.
Dubbs finished the second contest with two hits, while senior Emily Zengel, Tavik, Griffin and Harrison all finishd with one.
Sophomore Ali Caulkins took the loss after pitching 7.0 innings and allowing six earned runs. She finished with two strikeouts.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow when it plays Shenandoah at 10:00 am and has a rematch with Randolph at 12:00 pm.
