Bobcat Women Advance to CAC Championship

FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Melanie Bell scored the game's only goal late in the second half to give Frostburg a 1-0 victory over Salisbury in a Capital Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal game, Wednesday.

With the win, the Bobcats (9-7-2, 7-1-1) earn a spot in the CAC Championship game this Saturday and it marks the third time in the last four years that the Bobcats have advanced to the championship game.

Frostburg will travel to eighth-ranked Christopher Newport, which will host the title game for the second-straight year. The start time of the game has yet to be announced.

The Bobcats were outshot by Salisbury, 11-10, on the night, while Frostburg led in corner kicks 4-3.

Junior Emily Faust recorded seven saves in the game earning her seventh shutout of the season. Faust currently sits second in save percentage in the conference at .864.

The Bobcats' first scoring opportunity took place at 35:36 as junior Hailey Turney ripped a shot from 18 yards out on the right side that took a diving save from Salisbury keeper Hope Knussman. Off the ensuing rebound, sophomore Jesse Dunagan missed her shot wide left.

Heading into intermission the score remained knotted at zero.

At 66:55 Salisbury's Ruthie Lucas hit a shot on goal that took a diving save from Faust to keep it out of the net.

Senior Alyssa Malanik took a free kick from 50 yards out on the left side at 82:49 and connected with Bell in the box as she put the header past Knussman, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead and victory.

Faust made a impressive save in the 85th minute as Salisbury's Carly Glassford beamed a shot from point blank range but Faust was there to knock it away.

The win over Salisbury is the second of the season at Bobcat Stadium for Frostburg over SU. Those two wins are part of Frostburg's six-game winning streak that dates back to Oct. 11. Coincidentally, the Bobcats' last loss was a 4-0 shutout at Christopher Newport on Oct. 7.
