FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Haven Mackie netted two goals as Frostburg State defeated Capital Athletic Conference opponent Southern Virginia 3-0 Wednesday night.
With the win, the Bobcats (6-10-2, 4-5) clinched a spot in the CAC Tournament and will be the sixth-seed Frostburg draws third-seed Mary Washington in the first round on Saturday afternoon.
Frostburg outshot Southern Virginia 21-11 on the night, including a 9-3 edge in the second half. Mackie led the Bobcats in shots tallying six with four on goal.
First-year Juan Bofill captured his fourth shutout of the season and finished the game with seven saves.
At the 16:19 mark, sophomore Blake Geatz made an impressive save as he kicked the ball away from the goal just as it was about to go in.
The Bobcats first goal came from a penalty kick as Southern Virginia was called for a foul in the box. Mackie confidently stepped-up and put the ball in the lower left corner at 29:33 to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
At intermission Frostburg held a slim 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Southern Virginia was called yet again for a foul in the box, giving the Bobcats another penalty kick. This time, senior Mukor Harris put the ball past Southern Virginia's keeper Colin Flynn giving Frostburg a 2-0 advantage.
Mackie sealed the game at 76:19 as he ripped a shot from the left that bounced off Flynn's hands and found the back of the net giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead and win.
