Volleyball Ends Averett Tournament With Sweep Against Randolph

DANVILLE, Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team swept Randolph, 3-0, in its final match at the Averett Tournament, Sunday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Bobcats dropped a 3-1 decision to Emory & Henry.

FSU ended the tournament 2-2 with wins against William Peace and Randolph and dropped matches to Averett and Emory & Henry.

In the first game of the day, the Bobcats fell short in the opening to sets against E&H, 25-17 and 25-17, before coming back to win set three 25-19. However, the Wasps managed to edge the Bobcats, 25-23 in set four to take the match.

Junior Karli Grimes paved the way for the FSU offense tallying 11 kills, while her classmates Chelsea Parrinello and Naya Cheatem were not far behind with nine apiece. On defense, freshman Cori Smothers led the way with 11 digs. Junior Madelyn Torres also notched 24 assists.

In game two, the Bobcats dominated from the start and did not give up, winning three straight sets, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20, to seal the victory.

Once again, Grimes and Cheatem led the offense with eight kills each while Torres tallied 23 assists and Smothers totaled eight digs.

The Bobcats will host Penn State Altoona in their home-opener, Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 pm.
