FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team fell to Catholic, 1-0, in the Bobcats season-opening matchup on Friday evening at Bobcat Stadium.
Frostburg (0-1-0) gave a spirited effort, outshooting Catholic (1-0-0), 16-12, while also holding the edge in corner kick chances.
Both teams traded scoring chances throughout the first half, but neither squad was able to find the back of the net.
The scoreless tie was broken early in the second half, with Catholic's Patrick Mogan heading a goal past Frostburg keeper Hassan Mostafa (senior) in the 59
th minute. Mostafa tuned in a nice performance with seven saves, including an impressive diving stop on the CU's Aaron Boyle in the 22
nd minute.
The Bobcats offense continued to apply pressure in search of the game-tying goal, but chances off the foot of Nabayee Tesfu (senior) and Matt Morris (freshman) were denied by Catholic keeper Zachery Tashjy late in the second half.
Frostburg had several other scoring opportunities squandered because of offside calls. The Bobcats were whistled for five offside calls, compared to just one for Catholic. Sophomore Kelvin Tata led the Bobcats with four shots while junior Rodrigo Valenzuela had three of his own.
Frostburg State will resume play tomorrow afternoon against Saint Vincent. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. in the second game of the Frostburg State Tournament.
