PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The 17
th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team wrapped up its regular season on Sunday with a pair of losses. The Bobcats fell to 18
th-ranked La Roche in the first game, 6-5, and lost to Otterbein, 3-1, in the second contest of the day.
The Bobcats cap their regular season with a 30-12 overall record. FSU now awaits a possible bid to the NCAA Tournament that will be announced on Monday, May 16.
In the first game, the Redhawks (31-8) broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run eighth inning. A home run, a run-producing triple and an RBI single accounted for the four runs that put Frostburg in a 6-2 hole heading into the ninth frame.
The Bobcats answered with three runs to claw within one at 6-5. Senior Zach Keeler singled to lead off the inning, followed by a walk from senior Jeremy Remalia. Sophomore Chad Wein then smacked a three-run home run to give the Bobcats some late momentum. However, La Roche reliever Brady Hamer recorded the final two outs to hand the hosts the win.
Wein accounted for all three of Frostburg's RBI in the contest as he finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a three-run home run. Senior Jamaal Windom was 2-for-5 with a run scored on an error. Junior Devin Bell also added a run scored on an error.
Sophomore Greg Schneider endured his first loss of the spring after tossing 7.1 innings and allowing five earned runs. He also struckout five and allowed eight hits.
La Roche scored a single run in the first, but Frostburg rebounded with two in the sixth. Windom led off the frame with a single, junior Cody Harman followed with a single and Windom scored on an error on the play. Bell reached base of on a fielder's choice and later scored on an error as FSU led 2-1.
La Roche tied things up at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run setting up the late game scoring surge from both teams.
In the second game, the teams exchanged single runs in the first inning and Otterbein (31-8) plated two runs in the fourth for a 3-1 win.
Windom singled to lead off the first for the Bobcats, advanced to second on a ground out and then swiped third base. Bell singled up the middle that scored Windom for Frostburg's only run.
Otterbein's two runs in the fourth came off a double and an error for a 3-1 edge and eventually the win.
Senior Anderson Burgess suffered the loss for the Bobcats after tossing 4.0 innings and allowing all three runs, just two earned. He fanned three. Senior Logan Hunt tossed 4.0 innings in relief and struckout five batters, while senior Nick Huff pitched the ninth and fanned two.
Windom, Bell, along with juniors Brad Garrant ad JT Tipton accounted for the Bobcats' four hits.
