FROSTBURG, Md. – The 13
th-ranked Frostburg baseball team smacked three home runs on the afternoon, two of them gland slams, as the Bobcats rallied past Hood 11-9, Sunday.
It was the 10
th non-conference win of the season for Frostburg as it pushed its overall record to 23-8.
The Bobcats fell behind 7-0 after the top of the first inning, but grand slams from senior Connor Cooper in the bottom of the first and another from senior KJ Hockaday in the sixth helped them rally for the win.
Between the two of them, Cooper and Hockaday finished a combined 6-for-9 with nine RBI, four runs scored, two grand slams and one home run. Hockaday finished with five RBI and three runs behind a grand slam and a home run, while Cooper drove in four with a grand slam and scored once.
Seniors Pat Sines and Zach Keeler also posted RBI, while sophomore Lane Ward tossed 3.0 innings in relief and earned the win. He struckout five and scattered just two hits. Senior Nick Huff posted his CAC-best eighth save.
Following a 7-0 first-inning outburst from the Blazers (12-17), the Bobcats started their rally when senior Jamaal Windom led off the bottom of the frame with a double down the left field line. Junior Brad Garrant reached on a walk, while senior Zach Keeler struckout but reached first when the Hood catcher dropped the ball.
Cooper then drilled a pitch over the left field fence for his first career grand slam as Frostburg trimmed the deficit to 7-4.
Frostburg further trimmed its deficit with a single run in the fifth when Keeler grounded out to the pitcher that allowed Hockaday to cross home plate.
Hood added a pair of unearned runs in the six off a Bobcat error as it extended its lead to 9-5.
Hockaday and the Bobcats answered in the home half of the sixth for a 10-5 advantage. With the bases loaded, Sines was hit by a pitch that scored sophomore Chad Wein and Hockaday crushed a pitch over the left field fence that plated Sines, Windom and junior JT Tipton.
The Bobcats added their final run in the eighth when Hockaday smacked a solo home run over the left field fence for the 11-9 final.
Matthias Teufel took the loss for the Blazers after surrendering Hockaday's grand slam in the sixth.
