ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The 13
th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team closed out its CAC regular season on Saturday with a sweep of St. Mary's College.
The Bobcats improve to 22-8 overall on the season with the two wins, but more importantly, they capture the CAC regular-season title and will host the tournament championship, both for the second-consecutive year.
As the top seed, Frostburg has also earned a first-round home game in the tournament on Tuesday (April 19) and will host Penn State Harrisburg at 3:30 pm.
In the sweep of the Seahawks (9-22), Frostburg pounded out 22 hits and scored 14 runs to finish the CAC regular season at 13-5.
In game one, Frostburg scored two runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed. Senior KJ Hockaday doubled home senior Pat Sines and junior Brad Garrant singled home Hockaday as the Bobcats led 2-0.
Frostburg added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 5-0 cushion. Senior Zach Keeler doubled home Hockaday in the fourth, while junior Cody Harman smacked a home run to left for Frostburg's first run in the fifth. Sines later scored on an error for the second run.
The Seahawks narrowed their deficit to 5-4 after plating four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bobcats added one in the sixth when Harman singled home senior Connor Cooper.
Senior Kyle McCormack picked up the win after tossing 4.0 innings and fanning two. He surrendered just one hit. Senior Nick Huff posted his seventh save of the season.
In the second game, Frostburg rallied from an early 1-0 deficit as it plated all eight runs over the final five innings.
Senior Jamaal Windom doubled home Remalia and Harman in the top of the fifth for a 2-1 lead. Cooper singled home Hockaday and Remalia doubled home Cooper for two more runs in the sixth.
Hockday scored the Bobcats' only run in the seventh when he singled home senior Pat Sines.
FSU capped the afternoon with three runs in the top of the ninth. Sines singled home junior JT Tipton, Cooper drew a bases loaded walk that plated Sines and senior Teron Tyre scored on a wild pitch.
Junior Jake Stephens earned the win after scattering just three in 2.2 innings of work.
