VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team completed its season-opening weekend with a thrilling, 13-12, come-from-behind win in overtime over Virginia Wesleyan, Sunday afternoon.
The Bobcats (1-1) trailed by three goals with just over six minutes to play before they started their thrilling comeback. The Marlins (0-3) scored back-to-to goals at 12:02 and 7:57 to grab a 10-7 cushion, but the Bobcats were undeterred and scored five of the game's next six goals for the victory.
Senior Jamie Twardowicz started the run for Frostburg with an unassisted tally at 6:18 to narrow the count to 10-8. Two minutes later, freshman Morgan Cavey was fouled and scored on an eight-meter free position to pull FSU within one at 10-9.
Megan Schallock boosted the Virginia Wesleyan lead back to two goals with 2:32 showing for an 11-9 advantage.
Twardowicz answered again, this time with just 25 seconds left in regulation as she buried a shot that pulled the Bobcats back to within one, 11-10 and setup the late-game heroics.
Senior Marrissa Howk scored the final goal of regulation from roughly 12 yards out as she bounced home a shot with 0.1 seconds showing on the clock that tied things at 11-11 and sent the contest into OT.
In extra time, junior Molly Hart found Cavey with 1:38 left in the first overtime for the goal and the Frostburg win.
A run of five goals in the first half handed FSU a 5-2 lead just past the midway point of the stanza and the Bobcats held a 6-5 lead at intermission.
Cavey finished with four goals on seven shots, while Twardowicz had three goals and one assist. Junior Haley Hines caused four turnovers, while junior Dylan Teitelbaum posted nine saves for the win.
Frostburg outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 39-26, caused 17 of the Marlins' 27 turnovers and led in ground balls (20-18).
For VWC, Schallock finished with six goals, while Madison Carroll made 20 saves in net in the loss.
The Bobcats return to action this Thursday when they travel to McDaniel at 4:30 pm.
