FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State gave 15
th-ranked Mary Washington all it could handle in a 14-7 loss to the Eagles, Saturday afternoon at a snowy Bobcat Stadium.
Frostburg held a one-goal lead midway through the first half and tied the game on two different occasions before a second-half scoring surge carried UMW to the win.
Following a Mary Washington goal just over two minutes into action, Frostburg rebounded by tying the game at 1-1 when junior Logan Brady found freshman Morgan Cavey for the hosts' first goal nine minutes into action.
Six minutes later, Cavey found senior Marissa Howk as Frostburg surged to a 2-1 lead midway through the first half.
UMW answered with back-to-back unassisted goals before junior Megan Hart scored on a free position goal that knotted things again, this time at 3-3.
Bobcat junior Alyssa Barlow stopped a 3-0 scoring run for UMW with 5:43 to play with an unassisted goal and moments later, junior Taylor Mone scored just before the half to bring FSU's deficit to 8-5 at the break.
However, the second half belonged to Mary Washington as it scored the first six goals of the stanza to lead by as many as nine at 14-5.
Megan Hart scored at 3:12 and Molly Hart found the back of the net with a shot just 1:16 showing to bring the final deficit to 14-7 for the Bobcats.
Megan Hart led the team with two goals on four shots, while Molly Hart and Cavey each added a goal and an assist. Junior keeper Dylan Teitelbaum set a new career-best with 18 saves. Teitelbaum also scooped up four ground balls, while junior Emani Byrd led the way with three caused turnovers.
Frostburg was outshot in the contest, but the Bobcats scored seven goals on their 17 shots. FSU was also 2-of-4 on free positions and added 10 ground balls.
Emily Mott led the way for the Eagles with three goals and two assists. Kelsey Vincent added two goals and one assist.
FSU travels to Arcadia on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm non-conference tilt.
