Bobcats Drop In Overtime to St. Mary’s (Md.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – Despite going up 12-0 at the start of the game and closing an eight-point deficit in the final quarter, the Frostburg State women's basketball team dropped an 81-66 decision to St. Mary's (Md.) in overtime, Saturday afternoon.

In an exciting Capital Athletic Conference matchup, the Bobcats (3-18, 0-14 CAC) and the Seahawks (7-14, 5-9 CAC) combined for seven lead changes and tied the game five times.

Freshman Bryce Papp finished the game with a career-high 15 points, while senior Courtney Young posted a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds and her fifth double-double this season. Junior Kirsten Rayner ended the day with her 10th double-double of the season, contributing 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Bobcats came out strong, leading by 12 points in the opening minutes of play. Young put up four while Papp made a three-pointer to give the Bobcats a healthy lead.

However, St. Mary's came back into the game with back-to-back three-pointers from Kerri Kline and Bella Vagnoni. The Seahawks shut out FSU in the remaining three minutes of the first quarter to bring the game within two, 12-10.

Four three-pointers in the second quarter kept the lead alive for the Bobcats. Papp put up two back-to-back, while juniors Kache Fields and Keri Hudson each had one apiece. FSU was able to hold off the Seahawks to go into halftime with a 31-30 lead.

St. Mary's entered the third quarter scoring eight unanswered points and went up by as much as nine before two more three-pointers from Papp and a jumper from Young cut the lead to five. Papp made five three-pointers on the day.

A layup and jumper from Young followed by a made free throw from Rayner cut the Seahawk lead to three points heading into the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks went up by eight in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter but layups from freshman Amber Downey and Young cut the lead to four. During the remainder of the fourth quarter, both teams exchanged leads, and neither team led by more than two points.

Young made a jumper with one minute remaining to tie the score at 64-64 and carry the Bobcats into overtime.

In overtime, St. Mary's jumped ahead to a five point lead, but two made free throws from Young brought the game within three. However, the Seahawks ended overtime scoring 12 unanswered points to walk away with the victory.

The Seahawk's Nina Haller ended the day with 29 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Kline finished with 24 points and Olivia Nowlin finished with seven rebounds and six steals.

FSU will hit the road for a CAC matchup against Southern Virginia Wednesday, February 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
