SALEM, Va. – Sophomore Edwin Cole collected his second double-double of the 2016 Cregger Tournament at Roanoke College, but the Frostburg men's basketball team suffered a 77-68 loss in the consolation game to the Coast Guard Academy, Saturday afternoon.
Cole earned all-tournament honors for the Bobcats (1-10) after posting 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to Coast Guard. It is the second-straight game that he posted a double-double after finishing with 15 points and 12 rebounds last night against Anderson. He now has four double-doubles on the season.
Freshman guard Lawrence Pettis, Jr. came off the bench to lead FSU in scoring with a career-best 15 points behind four three-pointers. Junior Tyler Michael finished with 11 points, while junior Zachary Coalman finished with nine blocks, just one shy of tying his own school record.
The Bobcats outshot the Bears (4-6) from the field (41.4-37.3%) and held a slim 45-44 edge in rebounds.
Michael knocked down the game's first basket and Frostburg led by as many as six points on three occasions in the first eight minutes of the first half. Junior Christopher Coston hit two free throws for a 13-7 edge and moments later Michael hit another jumper for a 15-9 lead.
Coast Guard answered with a 12-0 run for a six-point lead of its own at 10:28 before a Steven Glasbrenner three-pointer ended the run at 9:52.
Senior Jake Wiegand and Michael made back-to-back jumpers as Frostburg pulled to within one, 26-25 with 4:22 to play.
At 2:42, Cole hit a layup that gave the Bobcats a quick 29-28 lead before the Bears answered with a three-pointer at 2:05. Coston made the final basket of the first half with 43 seconds left to pull Frostburg to within one, 34-33 at intermission.
Coast Guard opened up a seven-point lead early in the second half, but the Bobcats battled back and brought their deficit to two at 15:17 and again at 14:21. Cole hit a jumper at 15:17 and Pettis, Jr. knocked down a three at 14:21.
The Bears answered with an 8-0 spurt that pushed their lead to 10, 55-45 with 11:28 showing.
Coast Guard slowly pushed its lead to 14 points, 71-57 with 3:05 left, but Frostburg had one final run left.
The Bobcats answered with three quick three-pointers over the next 42 seconds to pull to within 73-66. Michael, Pettis, Jr. and junior Dalton Gaus all hit a three and Pettis, Jr. hit two free throws at :34 to further close the gap to 73-68.
However, Frostburg didn't make another basket and the Bears sealed the win with four foul shots inside the final 31 seconds.
Luke Daniels, who garnered all-tournament honors for the Bears and Adrian Chuquillangui tied for the team-lead with 16 points each. Justin Kane added 15.
Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4, when it hosts St. Mary's in CAC action at 8:00 pm.
