Frostburg Falls To Both Guilford and W&L

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team endured a pair of losses at the Washington & Lee tri-match, Saturday.

The Bobcats dropped their first match of the afternoon to Guildford, 3-0, behind scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 27-25. The Bobcats suffered a 3-0 setback to Washington & Lee in the second match of the day by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-23.

Junior Madelyn Torres handed out a combined 30 assists over the two-match span, while freshman Cori Smothers had 30 digs. Junior Zoe Harris smacked 12 kills and classmate Naya Cheatem had 13.

In the opening match, Guilford pulled away in sets one and two with late-game runs. In the first, the Quakers collected a 7-0 run for the 25-17 final, while in the second Frostburg opened up an 18-13 lead off a kill from freshman Biramba Tshitenge. Guilford rebounded with a 12-1 run for the game two win, 25-19.

The Quakers tried to run away with it by opening up a 12-5 lead. The Bobcats (8-14) rebounded to knot things three separate times late in the set before Guilford earned a 27-25 win. Cheatem had five of her 10 kills in the match during FSU's rally.

In the loss to W&L, the hosts started to slowly pull away in set one. A Harris kill and Smothers service ace brought FSU to within two at 11-9, but the Generals surged to a 16-9 lead en route to a 25-14 win.

In the second set, W&L broke a 3-3 tie and again began to slowly pull away. Back-to-back kills handed the hosts an 11-5 lead and later, a run of three-consecutive kills handed them a 22-13 lead late in the set.

Washington & Lee tried to pull away in set three after jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Bobcats fought back and pulled to within 7-5. Three kills by Harris over the middle part of the set and three attack errors for W&L allowed Frostburg to tie things at 18-18.

Three more attack errors from the hosts handed Frostburg a 22-19 lead, but Washington & Lee countered moments later with two service aces to tie things at 22. A service error on the hosts gave Frostburg its final lead at 23-22, before three-straight points from the Generals sealed the win.

Frostburg returns to action on Friday with a CAC road match at Penn State Harrisburg.
