VB Caps Season With Shutout Of Wesley

DOVER, Del. – Frostburg State hit a season-high .356 and posted 7.0 blocks as it capped its 2016 season with a 3-0 shutout of Wesley, Sunday afternoon.
 
The Bobcats end the fall campaign with a 12-18 overall record and finish 2-7 in the CAC.
 
Junior Madelyn Torres finished with 38 assists and five digs and her favorite target was junior Naya Cheatam, as she led the team with 17 kills on just 26 attacks for a .615 hitting percentage. Cheatem also registered six digs.
 
Freshman Cori Smothers led both teams with 15 digs, while freshman Biamba Tshitenge hit .455 with six kills, three digs and four blocks. Junior Zoe Harris was second for the Bobcats with nine kills and tied Cheatem for second on the team with six digs.
 
Frostburg collected the shutout of Wesley (11-17, 0-9) behind scores 25-12, 25-22 and 25-19.
 
Frostburg collected a 4-0 scoring surge in game one for a 10-6 lead and later used a 5-0 run for an 18-10 edge. Back-to-back kills from Harris accented the 4-0 surge, while kills from Cheatem and junior Chelsea Parrinello highlighted the 5-0 run. A block from Torres and Parrinello ended game one at 25-12.
 
The second set was the closest of the afternoon as neither could pull away until the Bobcats used a quick 3-0 spurt to take a 22-19 advantage late. A service ace from Harris and two errors from the Wolverines handed the Bobcats the lead. Cheatem connected on two kills late in the set for the 25-22 victory.
 
The third set mirrored the second as both teams battled back-and-forth for much of the contest. Wesley smacked a kill to even things at 19-19, but Frostburg closed out the match with a 6-0 run for the 25-19 win. Three attack errors from Wesley along with two kills from Harris and one from Cheatem pushed FSU to the win.
