FROSTBUG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team has earned the second seed and a first-round bye in the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Women's Soccer Tournament, beginning Saturday, October 29.
Frostburg will host a semifinal game this Wednesday at Bobcat Stadium against the winner of Salisbury and St. Mary's (Md.).
Season Wrap-Up
The Bobcats wrapped up an impressive 2016 regular season yesterday with a 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia University. Frostburg finished the year with a 10-8 overall record and a 7-2 mark in CAC play.
Frostburg rolled through the latter portions of the regular season, ending the year on a five-game winning streak where they outscored opponents 11-1.
Frostburg By The Numbers
Freshman Brooke Shehade leads the way offensively for the Bobcats in goals (8), assists (5) and points (21). She ranks among the top five CAC players in all of those offensive categories.
Junior keeper Rhianna Lapen has emerged as a consistent presence in goal, with a 1.04 goals against average. Lapen has recorded four shutouts in her seven wins this season.
Frostburg was recently given the 2015-16 College Team Academic Award by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for the ninth year in a row. The Bobcats posted an impressive 3.48 team GPA for the '15-'16 school year.
A View from the Other Side
Salisbury enters the postseason as the six seed with a 5-7-4 overall record, going 4-4-1 in conference play. Salisbury earned a 5-1 victory in its last game against Wesley on October 26.
The Sea Gulls are led by Ruthie Lucas, who has tallied six goals and 15 points this season. Salisbury averages over 14 shots per game, a mark that ranks fourth in the CAC.
Frostburg defeated Salisbury, 2-0, on October 15. Salisbury opened the second half with five-consecutive shots, but Lapen made three saves and the FSU defense blocked a shot to hold the Sea Gulls scoreless.
Sophomore Danielle Ferris and junior Katie Broadhurst scored the goals to give the Bobcats a 2-0 win.
St. Mary's (Md.) is the three seed, holding a 9-6-1 overall record and a 6-2-1 conference mark. Claire Kostelnik is tied for the conference lead in goals with 14, while Emily Huey and Jenna Pastel have each chipped in five goals on the season.
Frostburg and St. Mary's (Md.) squared off on October 1, and the Seahawks came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Bobcats. St. Mary's jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Claire Kostelnik and Gillian Sawyer before junior Melanie Bell tallied her second goal of the season.

Frostburg will face the winner of the Salisbury and St. Mary's (Md.) matchup in a semifinal contest Wednesday, November 2 at Bobcat Stadium.
