Strong Second Half Leads Frostburg to 2-1 Win Over SVU

FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Kourtney McLain connected on a corner kick in the 50th minute to give Frostburg a 2-1 lead as the Bobcats came away with a victory over Southern Virginia Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium.

The win over Southern Virginia (5-11, 2-7) hands the Bobcats a 10-8 overall record and a 7-2 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) mark. Frostburg also caps its regular season on a five-game winning streak, with four of those victories coming via the shutout. The Bobcats have outscored their opponents 11-1 during that stretch.

McLain's game-winning goal came on a corner kick from senior Jessi Martz that found its way through traffic on the right side of the goal.

SVU struck first, scoring in the 19th minute on a goal by Maia McArthur that beat senior keeper Karen Belteton.

The Knights had several more opportunities to extend the lead going into the half, but Belteton came up with two stops on Keirra Tanuvasa in the 20th minute and another key save on Reilly Anderson in the 27th minute.

Freshman Brooke Shehade was hauled down with a clear lane to the net in the 47th minute and was awarded a penalty kick from the officials. Shehade capitalized on the penalty kick opportunity and tied the game at one, beating keeper Megan Turner to the left corner of the cage.

McLain's goal came just over three minutes later.

Frostburg held a 11-9 advantage in shots over Southern Virginia on the night.

Sophomore goalie Rhianna Lapen earned the win, making two saves in 45 minutes of action.

The Bobcats' win vaults them into second place in the final CAC regular-season standings and they will have a bye in the CAC Tournament first round. York (Pa.) posted a 3-2 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) earlier this afternoon giving FSU a window to move into second.

Frostburg will host the winner of Salisbury and St. Mary's (Md.) in a semifinal match on Saturday, November 2 with a start time to be announced.
